Community Pharmacy Independent Prescribing Service
What is the service?
This is a pre-bookable service with one of our highly trained pharmacists. If you suffer from any of the below symptoms, you can be seen by one of our pharmacists for a full consultation. The consultation can take up to 30 minutes if needed. This can be booked in over the phone by calling us on 01978 757367. In the consultation the pharmacist will ask you questions in regards to your health and symptoms. If the pharmacist can, they will be able to prescribe you treatment without having to go to the GP. On occasions, the pharmacist may have to refer you to a GP without treatment.

The Pharmacists will use the Independent Prescribing Service module within Choose Pharmacy to record consultations and generate GP Summary Letters that are sent to the patients registered GP for all consultations, referral letters are also generated where an urgent referral (within 48 hours) is required. Pharmacists have access to the full Welsh GP Record (WGPR) via Choose Pharmacy to support clinical decision making.

Why are Health Boards developing and commissioning community pharmacy Independent Prescribing Services?
In response to the Delivering a Healthier Wales, the Welsh Pharmaceutical Committee (the statutory advisory committee to Welsh Government on all matters relating to pharmacy and the pharmacy profession) published the Pharmacy: Delivering a Healthier Wales report, which sets out long term goals to transform the role and contribution of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to maximise the health gains of citizens of Wales.

One of these goals is: ‘There will be an independent prescriber in every community pharmacy by 2030’.

The intended outcomes are to:
• Provide timely access to advice and appropriate treatment for management of relevant acute conditions.
• Reduce demand on GP consultations relating to relevant acute conditions, including people registering as temporary patients. Initially the service will focus on patients presenting with acute Ear, Nose and Throat and Urinary Tract Infections.
